Chapter 13

“Aren’t you chipper?” Grams asked, not for the first time this week.

Tori breezed through the kitchen, tossing Grams a smile and filling a dish with clotted cream. “Can’t a girl be in a good mood?”

Grams nudged Hannah’s arm. “I’d be chipper, too, if I was getting it from my neighbor every day.”

Hannah snorted and Tori choked out a laugh. “Grams!”

“Can’t argue with that one,” Hannah said.

Tori fanned her cheeks, blaming it on summer, which was threatening to come early. But Grams wasn’t helping. And Tori couldn’t really blame her either. It had been a long time since she’d seen Grams this happy.

It had been a long time since she’d felt this happy herself.

“It’s not every day,” Tori informed her.

After all, Morgan was there most of the time so they had to be careful. But Cole and Morgan had been over for dinner twice this week, and they’d gone to the neighborhood barbecue together even though they’d kept their hands to themselves for the most part. Last night, she’d spent the evening at Cole’s, her hand tucked in his as they rocked back and forth on the swing and watched Morgan play in the yard.

It all felt so normal, and normal was one of the things she wanted most in life.

Grams wrapped her arm around Tori’s shoulders. “You deserve this, sweetheart.”

Tori leaned against her, familiar doubts creeping in. “He’s better at this than I am.”

“He’s had more practice.”

True. He already knew what he didn’t want in a relationship. She still doubted every day he’d truly find in her what he was looking for.

She heard the front door chime and turned. “I’ll go.”

Morgan’s voice hit her first, then her wide smile. “Tori!”

The little girl raced to her, arms wrapping around her waist and wide eyes looking up with excitement. “We got you a present!”

Tickled, Tori looked to Cole and got that same jolt she always got when she saw him. Like a shock to her heart, a feeling of This is right.

His eyes squinted with his smile and that jolt hit her again, though this time the spark consumed her. Whispered to her of the future. Of love.

She swallowed hard, trying to focus when he held up a colorful gift bag exploding with tissue paper. A few other people in the shop watched the exchange.

“I picked it out,” Morgan said, bouncing on her toes. “Daddy, give it to her. Open it! Open it!”

“Morgan, Tori’s working. She might have to–”

“No, it’s fine. We’re slow now.” She grinned at him, heart full at the gesture. “Can I see?”

He set the bag on the nearest table. She felt the light dance of his fingertips up her spine as she reached for it. She shivered, mouth going dry. Every time she started a new day, she was reminded how much she wanted Cole to be a part of that day.

Morgan climbed on top of the chair and dug out the tissue paper, making Cole sigh.

“It’s wind chimes,” Morgan said.

Tori pulled them from the bag, metal stars tinkling against in each other in a sound that made her laugh.
